Guilin is a prefecture-level city in the northeast of China's Guangxi province. This place is well known to travelers and landscape photographers. Images from in and around Guilin will often pop up if you search for terms like landscape of China,  China travel etc. There are good reasons why the landscape of this region is so popular, its simply diverse and picturesque.

This was my second visit to Guangxi and I planned to photograph some of the well-known areas, I was fortunate to have a local person with me who helped me to make a good plan for my limited number of days to stay there. He is a photographer himself and understand the needs of a nature and landscape photographer and the challenges that we often face.

June of 2020, although it was difficult during the COVID-19 pandemic situation in China, I did my tests and all necessary formalities for the authorities to allow me.

How can I start this blog without the ever popular Yangshuo fisherman and the hills behind.

Earlier, before sunset I managed to get some good shots of the same fisherman in action casting his net, he was very enthusiastic and didn’t shy way to display his extraordinary skills.

Longji rice terraces is a popular travel destination for local Chinese as well as foreigners. This location can give entirely diverse view of its landscape depending on the season one visits and the weather at that given time. Considering it was rainy season when I was there, I expected those terraces to be filled with water and expected to catch some reflected light in my images.

Mount Xianggong or Xianggongshan as they call in Chinese language, is also one for the famous view points for sunrise. It can be hectic as lots of people queue for entering as early as 3 am in the morning although the gate officially opens at 4:30 am in summer time. We arrived a bit late around 5 am and I had to struggle to get a position to set up my gear, there was no way I could squeeze myself on platform 1 (the highest) nor the platform 2 so I had to settle at platform 3 and get the best out of it.

I often use a longer focal length lens to find details within a scene, like  shots within a shot. This helps to get something unique from the same location although it won’t scream that it is from that particular place.

Once the sun was over the distant hills the light became too harsh to photograph, everyone was packing up, I did too and almost walked away to go downstairs, when my local guide call me up to platform 1 to have a look. I went there it was almost empty and most photographers have left. We were in no rush and I setup my tripod without any expectation as the harsh light was no gone behind the clouds. Then suddenly this happened and I was lucky to capture it.

As a foreigner its bit difficult to travel around China if you do not have knowledge of local language. China is a huge country not only they have a diverse culture but many local dialects, so even if you can speak Mandarin or Cantonese it won’t help you much if you are in some areas out of prime locations. A local person or guide is always helpful. The final locations is far from the town and need to be travelled through narrow local roads, it was dark when we started from my hotel in Guilin, I only realized who beautiful and natural throughout the waywas  when I was returning.

This village only have  two families left who owns buffalos, buffalos are no longer used for farming and they have been replaced by modern machines long ago. These buffalos are kept for visitors and photographers who often visit to get their own photograph with these models. These farmer families earn by posing for the visiting photographers and I have heard it's  more than their work at farms.
